Berlin is the capital and one of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany. Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area, which includes 4.9 million people from more than 180 countries. Berlin is the center of European politics, culture, media and science.

The metropolis is home to world-renowned universities, research institutes, sporting events, orchestras, museums and celebrities. Renowned for its festivals, contemporary architecture, nightlife and avant-garde art, Berlin has become a focal point for individuals attracted to the liberal lifestyle and modern zeitgeist (“zeitgeist”). Berlin is home to 153 museums, including the Altes Museum (Old Museum), which has a bust of Queen Nefertiti, the Pergamon Museum, the Bode Museum, the Jewish Museum, the German Technical Museum in Kreuzberg, and the Humboldt Museum of Nature. A history that has the world’s largest mounted dinosaur and the best-preserved archeopteryx specimen.

Art galleries include the Gemäldegalerie (Picture Gallery), which focuses on “Old Masters” paintings from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century, the Nene Nationalgalerie, which specializes in twentieth century European painting, and the Hamburger Bahnhof, which exhibits a significant collection of modern and contemporary art.

Weather

In Berlin, the summers are comfortable and partly cloudy and the winters are long, very cold, snowy, windy, and mostly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 29°F to 77°F and is rarely below 14°F or above 88°F.

Transportation

The best way to get around Berlin is via the U-Bahn underground trains or S-Bahn regional, elevated trains, which are both a part of the city's extensive BVG public transportation system. U-Bahn. With subways running every 5-10 minutes during the day, the Berliner U-Bahn is a symbol of the city and by far the best way to get around. Easy to catch almost everywhere you are, this network of ten different lines, 173 stations and 91 miles (146km) of track reaches almost every corner of the city.
